Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen not only broke the World indoor mile record but also surpassed the World indoor 1500m record at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF in Lievin, France on Thursday (Feb. 13). He achieved a time of 3:29.63 in the 1500m, improving upon his previous world indoor record of 3:30.60 set in 2022 on the same track.
Ingebrigtsen also completed the mile in 3:45.14, beating the previous record of 3:46.63 set by Yared Nuguse days before in New York. He is the first athlete since 1954 to set world records for both the mile and 1500m in the same meet.
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent achieved a world-leading time of 7.75secs in the 60m hurdles also in Lievin. This victory came days after she was disqualified for a false start at the Millrose Games in New York. The Jamaican record-holder demonstrated resilience by pulling ahead over the final two barriers to secure the win. Grace Stark of the USA finished second with 7.82, and Laeticia Bapte of France took third place in 7.85.
Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia won the women’s 3000m in Lievin with a world-leading 8:19.98. This victory marked the first time she defeated Gudaf Tsegay in Lievin. Hailu’s performance improved upon her previous world-leading mark set in Ostrava nine days prior. Her time places her third on the World indoor all-time list.
Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji ran unchallenged for most of the second half of the race to win the women’s 1500m in a world-leading 3:58.89. Welteji is the current World Road Mile champion. Habitam Alemu (4:03.86) and Worknesh Mesele (4:05.06), both also from Ethiopia, finished second and third, respectively, for an Ethiopian sweep of the podium.
USA’s Grant Holloway continued his decade-long winning streak in the men’s 60m hurdles with a world-leading time of 7.36 in Lievin. The victory marked his fifth Lievin win. Holloway, who has now broken 7.40 on 25 occasions, intends to defend his World indoor title in Nanjing next month.
Leonardo Fabbri of Italy won the men’s shot put with a world-leading throw of 21.95m in the final round. He achieved this mark after opening with a foul but consistently throwing beyond 21 meters in his subsequent attempts. His compatriot, Zane Weir, secured second place with a season’s best of 21.72m. Fabbri is a World silver medalist.
USA’s Katie Moon won the pole vault with a height of 4.83m, marking her third world-leading distance in as many competitions this year. Britain’s Molly Caudery, the World indoor champion, finished second with 4.75m. Moon concluded her series with three attempts at 4.90m. This win further solidified her dominance in the event.
Dutchman Niels Laros won the men’s 3000m with a world-leading and Dutch record time of 7:29.49. He broke away in the final stages of the race to secure the victory ahead of Biniam Mehary of Ethiopia, who was close behind. Laros, 19, is one of the most exciting young distance talents globally.
Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez won the triple jump with a world-leading distance of 14.62m, and Lieke Klaver of The Netherlands won the 400m with a world-leading time of 50.76.
On Sunday (Feb. 16), Italy’s Mattia Furlani achieved a world lead in the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.37m at the Copernicus Cup in Poland. This jump also set a personal best and meet record for the 19-year-old Furlani who had previously jumped 8.21m earlier in the competition. Trailing Furlani was Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece with 8.03m, the same mark achieved by Sweden’s Thobias Montler, who finished third.
