Some this weekend (Feb 28–Mar 1) at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York. This national indoor meet will also serve as the selection event for the World Indoor Championships in Poland, March 20 to 22.
Top of the list in the sprints is Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 100m and a multiple-time World champion, known for his speed in the 60m, 100m and 200m events. Despite not having run the 60m this season, he is a major draw in the 60m this weekend, and he is aiming for his second national indoor title as he looks to set the tone early in the meet.
But Lyles will not have it easy as he is set face young Jordan Anthony, and season rivals Treyvon Bromell and Ronnie Baker. If he wins, he doesn’t plan to compete in Poland
Anthony, who is transitioning into the professional ranks, is the former NCAA champion in both 60m and 100m and boasts the world leading time going in the competition.
The women’s equivalent isn’t quite as stacked but still strong. Leading the batch of contenders is Jacious Sears, a World relay gold medalist and an elite short-sprinter who opened the season with strong indoor 60m performances. Expect her to be a contender in the women’s 60m dash that includes Alia Armstrong.
Cunningham, Clemons Hurdles Favorites
The sprint hurdles will be highly competitive. Top female entrants are:
- Christina Clemons, a veteran sprint hurdler with global experience and consistently fast times in the 60m hurdlers and 100m hurdles.
- Alaysha Johnson, a strong contender in U.S. hurdles with national-level performances, she is expected to challenge for a podium finish.
- Alia Armstrong, NCAA champion and elite young hurdler, brings top collegiate speed to the national stage.
- Anna Hall, known mostly for combined events, has elite speed and could be competitive in this race.
The men’s side is equally interesting with high-quality competitors. Among them:
- Trey Cunningham, an elite sprint hurdler with international medals, is one of the fastest entrants in the 60m hurdles and a top favorite for the title.
- Daniel Roberts, Olympic silver medalist (110m hurdles outdoors) and proven big-meet performer in the sprint hurdles.
- Cameron Murray, a hurdler with strong collegiate credentials and international experience, is a contender for the title here.
- Johnny Brackins Jr., nationally competitive he has posted top collegiate 60m hurdle times, will be in the mix.
